Attendance

Reporting Absences:

If your student is going to be absent, please call 268-3833 Ext. 26800 by 8:00 a.m., if possible.

Tardies:

  • Students are tardy after the 8:15 a.m. bell.
  • They must report to the office for a hall pass when tardy.
  • Three (3) or more tardies will result in administrative intervention with parent/family/guardian.

Early Pick-up:

  • Students may not be picked up during the last 15 minutes of the school day.
  • Students must be signed out in the main office.
  • The individual signing the student out will be asked to show identification.
  • The name of the individual picking up the student must be in our Student Information System for us to release a student.

Habitual truants are reported to appropriate authorities such as:

  • The APS Attendance Office
  • Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD)
  • Juvenile Probation & Parole
  • District Attorney 
  • Truancy Court  
  • State of New Mexico

Consequences in New Mexico law include:

  • license revocation, fines, and loss of New Mexico monetary assistance
  • referral to District Attendance Office
  • community Truancy Crisis Team Intervention

Students who miss more than half of their school day are considered absent a full day.

Absences may be excused for the following reasons with appropriate documentation:

  •     illness (including chronic illness documented on a health plan, Individualized Education
  •     Program (IEP), or 504 plan
  •     limited family emergencies; family deaths
  •     medical, health, or legal appointments
  •     suspensions
  •     religious commitment
  •     limited extenuating circumstances as approved in advance by the school administration

Cell Phones/ Electronic Devices

These must be turned off at all times during the school day including lunch and stored in backpacks.

VBMS is not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones.

Unauthorized use of personal electronic devices includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Possessing, viewing, sending or sharing video or audio information having sexual, violent or threatening content on school grounds, school events or school busses shall be prohibited and may result in disciplinary action and/or confiscation of the personal electronic device.
  • Transmitting school materials for unethical purposes such as cheating.
  • Any activity, which may be in violation with the Albuquerque Public Schools Bullying Prevention policy and procedural directive.

Visitor Policy

  • Visitors must report to the main office off Kathryn Street, sign in, and obtain a guest pass with the secretary.
  • Individuals will be asked to go to the main office if they are on our campus without a guest pass.
  • In most cases visitors/guests under the age of 18 will not be allowed on campus.

Bicycles/Scooters/Skateboards

Students riding these to school are getting wonderful exercise, but they need to dismount when they arrive at the perimeter of the campus.

Bicycles should be locked in the provided racks on campus and scooters, skateboards, etc. should be left in a classroom until the end of the school day for retrieval.

If a problem persists, the item will be confiscated for a 24 hour period, a week, or two weeks depending on the number of previous warnings and it will be required that the item be picked up by a parent/family member.

Continuous problems could result in the item being confiscated for the remainder of the school year and not returned until the end of May.
